| The best AI tools for SEO marketing are Semrush from $139 a month for the full suite, Ahrefs from $129 for link and audit data, and Surfer SEO or Frase at $49 for on-page work. Agencies should look at Rankability at $99 with unlimited seats. |
| How we compare |
|---|
| Judged on published price and billing basis, on which layer of the workflow the tool actually owns, and on what the AI features cost on top. Prices were re-read off the vendor pricing pages linked below in September 2026. Every price was re-checked against the vendor’s own pricing page in September 2026, and figures available only from third-party trackers are marked as reported. No vendor paid for placement, and no affiliate arrangement decided the order. We did not run a head-to-head lab test, so nothing here is ranked on our own benchmark scores. |

Best AI tools for SEO marketing compared

| Semrush | Research, audits, rank tracking, content | $139/mo SEO, $117.33 annual | Yes: AI Visibility Toolkit $99/mo per domain |
| Ahrefs | Backlinks, site audit, AI mention tracking | From $129/mo Lite | Yes: AI indexes near $199 per platform |
| Surfer SEO | On-page scoring while you write | $49/mo Discovery, annual | Included in the plan |
| Frase | Briefs and outlines from ranking pages | $49/mo Starter | Included in the plan |
| Rankability | Agency workflow across many clients | $99/mo Starter | Prompt tracking included, no separate add-on |
| Writesonic | Drafting plus AI visibility reporting | $79/mo Starter | Included from the $79 Starter tier |
The add-on is where the budget goes
The suite price you compare is no longer the price you pay, because AI visibility is sold separately. Semrush lists its AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 per month for one domain and 25 tracked prompts, on top of the SEO plan at $139. Ahrefs prices its AI indexes near $199 per platform, or about $699 for all six, on top of a Lite plan from $129. For promoting this work on LinkedIn, see our guide to AI tools for LinkedIn. For campaigns, email, ads and social beyond SEO, see our guide to AI tools for marketing.
Do that arithmetic before choosing a suite. A team wanting research, audits and AI mention tracking is looking at roughly $238 a month on the Semrush path and materially more on the Ahrefs path once several engines are switched on. Standalone AI visibility trackers start around $29, so the suite is worth its premium only if you genuinely use the research and audit layers as well.
The other honest point: the on-page tools are the cheap half of this list and the half that changes pages. Our guide to answer engine optimization tools covers the AI visibility category on its own terms, and ranking in Google AI Overviews covers the page work these tools point at. If the goal is assistant citations specifically, getting cited in ChatGPT is a narrower and more actionable target than general AI visibility. The six tools in detail
Semrush
Semrush is the broadest suite: keyword research, audits, rank tracking and the renamed Content Toolkit. The entry SEO plan is $139 a month, or $117.33 annually, then Starter at $199 ($165.17 annually), Pro+ at $299 ($248.17) and Advanced at $549 ($455.67); built-in AI prompt tracking starts on Starter with 50 prompts. The older Pro, Guru and Business tier names still quoted elsewhere have been retired. The AI Visibility Toolkit is a separate $99 per month add-on covering one domain and 25 prompts.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs has the strongest backlink and site-audit data, with Brand Radar layered on for AI mentions across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. The base Lite plan is $129 a month, then Standard $249, Advanced $449 and Enterprise $1,499. Brand Radar AI is listed from $199 a month; the $699 figure for all six AI platforms is reported by trackers rather than shown on the pricing page. Product brands should also read our guide to AI search optimization for consumer goods.
Surfer SEO
Surfer SEO is on-page optimisation that scores a draft against ranking pages on term coverage, headings and length while you write. The 2026 lineup is listed as Discovery $49 per month on annual billing, Standard $99, Pro $182, Peace of Mind $299, with Enterprise now quoted individually (re-read 11 October 2026).
Frase
Frase builds a brief and outline from the pages currently ranking, then writes into it. Starter is listed at $49 per month, Professional at $129 and Scale at $299, with 20 percent off annual billing and a seven-day trial with no card on every plan.
Rankability
Rankability is built for agencies: every tier includes the full platform with unlimited clients and unlimited users, and the tiers differ by how many AI prompts they track daily and how many workspaces they hold: Starter $99 for 60 prompts and one workspace, Core $199 for 125 and three, and Team $399 for 250 and ten, all with unlimited seats.
Writesonic
Writesonic is content production with AI search visibility reporting on higher tiers. Its pricing page lists Starter at $79 a month for 15 AI articles, 10 site audits and 50 prompts tracked daily, Basic at $199 and Growth at $399, with AI visibility tracking included from the entry tier and no free plan shown.
The add-on tax, worked out in full
Everyone quotes the entry price of a suite. Nobody multiplies it out once the AI visibility layer is switched on. Ahrefs is the cleanest case to model because both numbers sit on one published page: Lite from $129 a month, Brand Radar AI from $199 a month.
| What you actually buy | Published monthly rates | Arithmetic | Real monthly bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-page only: Surfer Discovery + Frase Starter | $49 + $49 | 49 + 49 | $98 |
| Ahrefs Lite, no AI visibility | $129 | 129 | $129 |
| Ahrefs Lite + Brand Radar AI | $129 + $199 | 129 + 199 | $328 |
| Add-on share of that bill | — | 199 ÷ 328 | 61% |
| Add-on relative to the platform it sits on | — | 199 ÷ 129 | 1.54× |
| Annual difference it makes | — | (328 − 129) × 12 | $2,388 |
Read the last three rows together. On published rates the AI visibility layer costs more than the SEO platform underneath it, and it turns a $1,548 annual commitment into a $3,936 one. The same $199 a month would buy roughly two months of a complete on-page stack (199 ÷ 98 = 2.03), which is the half of this list that actually changes pages. That is the trade nobody puts in a comparison table, and it argues for buying measurement last rather than first.
A caveat worth more than the arithmetic: this category reprices and repackages often, and plan names move with it. Every price above is linked to the vendor page it came from so you can re-run the sums yourself rather than trust a figure that was true in September 2026. Before signing anything annual, open the two pricing pages side by side and redo the division. For the standalone side of the market, our comparison of AI search monitoring platforms shows what the same money buys without a suite attached.

Building a stack without buying twice
- Pick one research suite, not two. Semrush and Ahrefs overlap heavily on keywords and audits. Paying for both is common and rarely justified below agency scale.
- Add one on-page tool at $49. Surfer if drafts arrive shapeless, Frase if writers start from a blank page. They solve different problems and you usually need only one.
- Delay the AI visibility add-on. Run a free AI visibility check first. If assistants already name you across the engines your buyers use, the $99 add-on is not urgent.
- Count seats and domains, not features. Rankability includes unlimited seats at every tier, with workspaces capped at 1, 3 and 10, which changes the maths sharply once you pass three or four client sites.
- Re-check pricing every quarter. This category repriced twice in the last year, and annual contracts signed on old assumptions are the most expensive mistake in it. Pair the re-check with the tactics in our LLMEO execution playbook, which is what the spend is meant to support.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best AI tools for SEO marketing?
Semrush from $139 a month is the most complete suite, Ahrefs from $129 has the best link and audit data, and Surfer SEO or Frase at $49 cover on-page work. Rankability at $99 suits agencies. Budget separately for AI visibility, which every suite now sells as an add-on.
Does AI search optimisation hurt traditional rankings for SEO marketers?
No. The work overlaps almost entirely: a direct answer near the top, descriptive headings, tables instead of dense prose, and HTML that renders without JavaScript all help classic rankings too. The only genuine tension is editorial. Writing purely for extraction can produce a page that answers ten unrelated questions and persuades nobody, which costs you conversions rather than rankings.
What content structure gets extracted by AI Overviews for SEO marketers?
Self-contained passages; some outside analyses of AI Overview citations put the typical block at 130 to 160 words, though Google publishes no such limit. Google’s own Search Central documentation on AI features sets no separate technical requirement: pages qualify through ordinary indexing and snippet settings, which puts the whole burden on structure. The reliable shape is a heading phrased the way the question is asked, a two to three sentence direct answer immediately underneath, then a list or table carrying the detail. A passage that depends on the paragraph above it to make sense is unlikely to be lifted.
How long should an AI-optimised article be for SEO marketers?
Section length matters more than article length. Sections of roughly 200 to 400 words, each opening with a direct answer, extract well; the article should end when the questions do. Padding to hit a word count works against you, because it dilutes the passages that would otherwise have been quotable.
How much do AI SEO marketing tools cost?
Prices checked on vendor pricing pages on 12 September 2026: Semrush SEO $139 monthly or $117.33 annually, Ahrefs Lite from $129, Surfer from $49 on annual billing, Frase from $49 ($39 billed yearly), Rankability from $99, Writesonic from $79 with AI visibility tracking included. Add-ons are where the real cost sits: the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 per domain and Ahrefs AI indexes are listed near $199 per platform.
Do you need both Semrush and Ahrefs?
Rarely, below agency scale. Both cover keyword research, rank tracking and site audits, so paying for two mostly buys the same answers twice. Choose Ahrefs if backlink data drives your strategy and Semrush if you want content and AI prompt tracking in the same suite, then put the saving towards the $49 on-page tool that actually changes pages.
Conclusion
For most in-house teams the sensible AI SEO stack in 2026 is one research suite plus one on-page tool: Semrush or Ahrefs from roughly $129 to $140, plus Surfer or Frase at $49. Agencies should price Rankability at $99 against per-seat suites before assuming the big names are cheaper. Treat AI visibility as a separate line item you add once you have evidence you need it, because at $99 to $699 a month it is the fastest way to double a stack budget without doubling output. Our wider round-up of AI tools for marketers covers the layers beyond search. One caution on Rankability: its pricing page would not load for us on 11 and 12 October 2026, and recent third-party reviews disagree, some reporting that the $99 entry plan has gone and plans now start at $199 on a credit basis.
